About me
I have always held a fascination for moving images. As a child I created films and animations with my parents video camera. This, combined with an interest in drawing led me towards a career in animation. I graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in 2002 with a B.F.A. in character animation. I currently work at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio as a storyboard artist and designer.
Recently my personal work has moved away from drawing and film making and toward Mechanical sculpture. I find it refreshing to work with metals after spending all day staring in to a computer screen and light table. Unlike drawing, there are no “cheats” when building actual machines. The piece must actually work and withstand the physical forces acting upon it. I find this challenging, and quite rewarding.
I usually do not blueprint my designs. I tend to work straight-ahead, building the machine in layers, focusing on one particular movement at a time. I keep a loose idea of the finished object in mind, but I try to let the piece grow organically. I like to be surprised by the direction my work takes me. I make no attempt to hide the internal working of my machines. The animating mechanism is as important to me as the movement itself.
